My burrito was really good, seemed a little pricey but that's Alaska.

After living in Az for 6 years, my family have been on a search for great Mexican food, and we finally found it here! Also the service has been top notch every time we've been here!

Very yummy food. A little on the expensive side for dinner but will certainly go again at lunch time. We had a great waitress who was very responsive to filling our drinks and bringing more salsa.

They've begun to win me over as we've eaten here many times with consistently tasty success. My only complaint to date is that they don't do a good job with the tacos if you get them delivered - the shells are fall-apart damp from ingredients.

Food was good. We went at 4 and waitress was super busy. She never asked to refill our drinks, salsa, or chips. Actually she just took our order and brought our food then disappeared. She was hustling but I think she was the only server.

Wow this place is awesome! A small group of us decided to come here for dinner on New Years Eve. We arrived around 9 pm and were cheerfully greeted and seated. I must say for New Years eve I felt so welcomed and treated so nicely. I wish I had caught our waitress' name but she was fantastic. She was funny, caring, patient when we couldn't decide what to order, and always attentive to what we needed. The food was also very tasty! We were all pretty satisfied with our food. By the way, give their strawberry margaritas a try! They are yum! We ended up staying there until 11:45pm. We simply crossed over to their little bar area. The bartender abs his brother were super cool! They were so outgoing and made this visit just pure fun and good times. We didn't feel rushed and he would always come around to make sure we liked our drinks. They also seemed to be in great spirit considering it was New Years Eve and 15 min short of the new year. I will definitely be returnin! The ambiance is great and the staff is fantastic! I'm sure if they had some kind of New years eve event it would be pretty awesome because even though we were one of the few patrons there, we had a jolly old time next to the amazing staff.

I dare anyone in the anchorage bowl to even attempt to find a better Mexican spot....guarantee you that you can't. This place is just amazing. The food is off the charts!!

Best Mexican food in Eagle River, with super attentive service. We like ordering from the a la carte menu for variety without the extras we don't usually finish (rice and beans). Excellent margaritas.

Worst dining experience in a long time! I had fajitas that were so dry and bland I couldn't eat them and my husband had some ridiculously over priced "specialty" carnitas that was all show and awful in taste and quality. Margaritas were even bad...Would NEVER go back!

Best Mexican in Anchorage I've found! Worth the drive. Sit at the bar and everyone knows each other and are super friendly. Portion sizes are generous. I'm not a local but travel up to anchorage for business several times per year and love finding hidden gems like this one!

This is our favorite place to go to in Anchorage for Mexican food! It's definitely not nearly as good as authentic Tex-Mex cuisine, but it still has decent food and quality service! They always provide you with a complimentary basket of chips, and bring both a mild and hot salsa for you to try with it, which I appreciated. The servers here are all extremely attentive and respectful, and their hispanic background gives a sense of authenticity to the atmosphere of the restaurant. The atmosphere is cheery and pleasant without feeling too tacky, so I like it. I've always loved Mexican food, and this restaurant definitely provides adequately for my needs while living for a few years up here in Alaska!

Good food. Not super authentic to me. But I love the food. Chips and Salsa are always so delicious. It is a great place to take the family.

Pleasantly surprised to have enjoyed Mexican food all the way in Alaska! Far better than the local Mexican chain restaurants we've got in Cali. Tamales masa was tender, beef filling was flavorful. Possibly the best Mexican rice i've had!

Jalapeños makes the best Mexican cuisine in Eagle River. Wonderful staff serves generous portions and speedy delivery to the table is consistent. Muey Bueno!

Being that this is Alaska you will never get authentic mexican food no matter what. This place is as good as it gets. Not only was our server very friendly but the food was on point. Without even asking our server brought out this sauce for the chips which was a garlic style dip. Although it was spicy it was on awesome. I took my roommate here for the first time and he was stoked.

The locals know this place! The family that owns this place has a history of family members on the business for more than 30 years. It's family and it's authentic. Good food! Great atmosphere! Awesome service! What more can you ask! $$? You'll want to give a big tip! Don't forget to send thanks to the cooks! I enjoyed it and so will you! Salud!

I had the Cadillac margarita.... Super sweet tastes store bought. I also had the chips a cheese appetizer, nothing special. I'm from Texas an love Mexican food this was disappointing.

We eat here often. The best, friendliest, and fast Mexican food in Eagle River. Always hot, always good. Not a big fan of the bar side, the service isn't as good. Great place overall, recommend to anyone who likes good Mexican food.

The positives: food was pretty decent, portions were large, and the server was very attentive. Negatives: the food was only pretty decent, slightly over priced, and the mirrored wall and some of the lighting looked like they were pulled from a dated bowling alley bar. The meal began with chips and salsa. The mild salsa was bland and runny, but the hot was thick and flavorful. We ordered a fiesta platter appetizer. I think the fryer might have been turned up too high because all of the fried items were over cooked and crunchy. My entree was the recommended mi favorito. The presentation was interesting in a pig shaped stone bowl. The base was a heap of shredded pork, but vegetables were in short supply. I found the top of the pork a bit dry and flavorless, but stirring the bowl brought up some juice and additional tastes. In all the whole experience was a bit lackluster. If I'm in the area around dinner time again I'll likely drive on as there are similarly, or lower, prices options with better food nearby.

Compared to Garcia's restaurant in eagle river, this place is hands down 100% better! I had a carne asada chimichanga off the lunch menu and it hit the spot! Happy to have somewhere with good food in Eagle River!

Decent Mexican fare in a festive environment. I had the 2 chicken flautas dinner (because shredded beef wasn't available) and my husband had the Grande Tostada. Both came with sour cream and guacamole, mine also came with rice and I asked for black beans. I also ordered a lime margarita with wine (yes, I am a wimp). Everything was good. Best salsa so far with yummy cilantro and a hint of clam juice or fish sauce or anchovy, not sure which they use but both hot and mild were chunky and fresh. Just wish they had thinner chips and a bit thinner, not so fried flautas wrap. Excellent service.

Yummy and delicious food. Service is friendly. I recommend eating here. We will come again.

I had the 2 chicken flautas dinner. It was OK and the price was reasonable $13.95 Margaritas on the other hand were weak and pricey. I found out later are made with wine not tequila :( Over all I would go back if ever in ER again.

It seems like all the Eagle River restaurants are ridiculously inconsistent on their service and food. From all the reviews I've read, people will get great food one night, terrible the next. Somehow I managed to get one of the great nights at Jalapeno's. I went with friends of mine that recommended it over Chepo's. We went at about 6pm on a Friday night. The chips and salsa we both great. Compared to La Mex, the chips were about ten times better. I couldn't believe I'd settled for hard, greasy chips before. Salsa was much better as well- my friend got them to bring a hot salsa verde as well- it was tasty, but too hot for me. We got our drinks quickly and our food was fast as well. Our waitress got one of us black beans when he requested refried, but that was the only thing wrong and she brought him over a side of them not long after. She was on top of things, our drinks never needed refills and she was around to check on us often. I thought the black beans and rice were outstanding. I actually ate all of the huge portion of black beans that I was served. I think that's a first. The chili rellenos was bland, but I'm pretty sure that's because they didn't put any sauce on it. I didn't realize it until later. Next time I'll try the chili verde or the chili Colorado. All in all, I thought the food was worth a repeat visit and hopefully I'll get there on another good night. The prices were very reasonable- for three of us, each getting an alcoholic drink, the bill was only $67. About as good of a deal for supper in Alaska as you can get.

Service was average, my burrito was decent, and the atmosphere was nice. For an a la carte burrito, though, it was overpriced for what you get.

What a great surprise! We quit coming here several years ago because of food quality. Last week we went and everyone had a great meal and our server was on point. I never order rice and beans, but having tasted off another plate, I will order their's. Beef taco and chx enchilada were nicely flavored, lots of meat and not overly salty. Spot on good Mexican American food.

Some of the best dinner mexican in the anchorage area! Amazing service, fast and attentive staff. Love it and will come back again!

Hubby and I split a seafood chimichanga. It was delicious. Chips and salsa were good too. ALl was as good as we get at home near McAllen Texas

Bland, Bland, Bland and oh did I mention bland with a hint of boring. The chips were rockhard as well. When I looked at the menu I found myself saying damn.. Nothing excites me or even catches my eye on this menu but I better figure something out because the waitress is starring at me. Also pretty expensive.

Equal to it's Wasilla counterpart, Jalapenos is amazing! Authentic Mexican food right here in our own back yards.

I'm not sure if the other people who rated this place just don't know about Chepo's or if they don't know what they're talking about. This place is ok, but it's not as good as Chepo's. They don't even have a liquor license for the margaritas. They make them with Wine?? What the hell is that?! Food is ok, but I'd recommend Chepo's for a better meal.

Thank God Mr. and Mrs. Ramos decided to open Jalapeos in Eagle River. Until Jalapeos opened many locals thought traditional Mexican food was only prepared in a microwave or deep fryer (what you get at the other two places in town). Jalapeos has a very good menu with traditional Mexican favorites. The ingredients area fresh, the staff is very friendly and attentive, and the atmosphere is very colorful and festive. Be sure to ask your server about the daily specials.

Was doing business at nearby Ft Richardson and went to Jalapeno's for lunch with a colleague. The food was decent initially but it was like herding cats to get the waitress to pay attention to us, even though it wasn't exactly brisk business. I was pretty full by the end and just nibbling on my refried beans when "CRUNCH"... I bit down on something hard! I fished out a rock about the size of my pinky nail which I had broken in two... thankfully no damage to my teeth! When the waitress finally moseyed over, I told her about the rock and she responded... "Happens all the time!" no apology, no embarrassment., no offer of any compensation.. REALLY!!! Unbelieveable! I replied that I grew up in Texas and in all my years of eating refried beans NEVER have I found a rock! It is unacceptable to serve food with rocks in it!... chirp chirp! No response! Not sure what passes for "hearty Mexican fare" in Alaska... but anywhere else I've been doesn't include ROCKS!

I come to this Mexican food restaurant more than any other, since I live in Eagle River. This one is very good, although there are 2 in Anchorage I think are slightly better (Pancho's Villa and Gallos). Everything I've had at this one is very good, except the sauce used on the cheese enchiladas sucks and tastes too much like a hot salsa. The decor and wait staff are very good too. For Eagle River residents, by all means eat at this place and stay the heck away from Garcia's!

Bland food, poor service, expensive price. I came in and it was virtually empty so that leaves no excuse for the sluggish service. I am still trying to figure out how can mexican food with a margarita $25 a person. I don't mind spending the money if the quality was there. Severely disappointing.

Best Mexican food in Eagle River. I AM Mexican, and from Texas, and while this would be slightly above average in my neck of the woods, it's above and beyond the other restaurants here in the area. I do, however, hate that they don't do substitutions. The staff is friendly, and most speak Spanish, thank God. The desserts are so so, but who has room after a big like they serve?

  • Kacie S.

Best mexican food we've found in AK. It's not as good as that in the lower 48 but it will do b/c it's in ER and there are very few options. Food is usually pretty good. Servers are friendly but be warned a Corona is like $5! I don't like the way they take your glass from the table to refill it- it makes me think that it could get mixed up with another persons- yuck!

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
